With working dogs, form follows function and obedience and intelligence are paramount. Working dogs were bred to perform specific tasks throughout history and can be found in the earliest recorded history. Working dogs live to serve, it is in their very nature.

Working dogs have been bred and trained to perform many specialized duties. Some of which are not without great danger. A few of those jobs are listed below:

Herding livestock: Breeds like Border Collies and Australian Shepherds.

Police and military work: German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, etc.

Search and rescue: Bloodhounds, Labrador Retrievers, etc.

Service and therapy: Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, etc.

Guarding property: Rottweilers, Dobermans, etc.

Detection dogs: Trained to detect substances like drugs or explosives.
